Location

Motril is a Spanish city and municipality located in the south-central part of the Costa Granadina region, in the province of Granada, autonomous community of Andalusia. On the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, this municipality borders the municipalities of Salobreña, Vélez de Benaudalla, Lújar, Gualchos-Castell de Ferro and Torrenueva Costa. Other nearby towns are La Gorgoracha, Lobres and Caleta-La Guardia. The Guadalfeo River and the Puntalón Rambla run through its terminus.
The Motril municipality is the southernmost in all of Granada, and includes the population centers of Motril - municipal, regional capital and seat of its own judicial district -, El Varadero, Carchuna, Calahonda, Puntalón, Playa Granada, Los Tablones, Las Ventillas , La Garnatilla, La Perla and La Chucha.
It is the second most populated city in the province, only preceded by the capital. Its geographical position makes it an industrial and commercial center. The port of Motril is, at the same time, a commercial and fishing port, also having a marina—the Real Club Náutico de Motril—as a recreational port. In recent years the port has been experiencing significant growth due to its communication lines with the African continent.
